Sunday 1st September 11am-12pm
Join Alison Rutstein and Yvonne Mes for a Q &A on all things dinosaur and opal. There will be fossils and opals to dig up and admire!
About the author:
Yvonne Mes is a children’s author and illustrator. She writes and illustrates picture books for children with curious minds. Having a curious mind led her to wonder why there weren’t that many books about Australian dinosaurs and The Opal Dinosaur. A frequent speaker at schools and writers’ festivals, Yvonne uses her many years of experience as an early childhood professional to present engaging, entertaining, and educational sessions for children and grown-ups!
About the MC:
Ali Rutstein is a children's book author. She has a background in zoology, science writing and animal behaviour, but then swapped to working with people. She writes picture books, junior fiction and short stories. Her debut picture book, Ladybirds do not go to daycare, was published in 2023 and was a CBCA notable. Her books are inspired by funny events and people (usually her sons) and often have a strong animal focus. Alison has two new picture books coming out in October.
About the book:
The Opal Dinosaur is a nonfiction picture book of the discovery of a new Australian dinosaur with very special bones.
Millions of years ago, a small dinosaur slips and scrambles, before sinking into the earth. Her bones lie under the soil, slowly transforming into something wonderful. Then, one day, a miner spies a shimmer of blue and green.
The Opal Dinosaur explores the amazing discovery of rare opalised bones. Follow the journey as the bones are found, forgotten and then finally identified as an exciting new dinosaur species.
Review:
The forging of greatness can take a long, long time. Like the fossilisation of bones, the creation of precious opals, and the making of memorable picture books. The Opal Dinosaur by Yvonne Mes and Sylvi Morris is one of those long-awaited for special creations.
This is not just your average book about dinosaurs. I loved both her tale and the careful before and after knitting together of a millennium of stories. The endpapers and information facts pages alone are enough to fill up on. Providing fascination, fun and fact enough to enthuse and entertain dinosaur addicts, budding scientists and anyone who just loves sparkly pretty things. Kids Book Review Dimity Powell
